About M4A4 Howl

M4A4 Howl features a custom paint job centered on a snarling wolf rendered in fiery orange and red tones across the rifle’s receiver, set against a dark body with red claw-like streaks. Among M4A4 skins in CS2, it is particularly notable for its Contraband rarity and the aggressive wolf artwork that defines the design.

Release & Source

The M4A4 | Howl was originally released as part of The Huntsman Weapon Case in May 2014. Shortly after launch, Valve discovered the artwork infringed on third-party copyright and reclassified the skin to Contraband rarity, removing it from the case's drop pool. It is the only Contraband-rarity skin in CS2, which has made it one of the most iconic and valuable items in the game's history.

Frequently Asked Questions

What stickers look best on M4A4 Howl?

Stickers that match the red, orange, and black palette work best on the M4A4 Howl. Good options include Howling Dawn for theme matching, Team Dignitas (Holo) Cologne 2014 for warm orange tones, Natus Vincere (Holo) Katowice 2015 for yellow-gold highlights, and Flammable for a clean red accent. If you want a more aggressive craft, 3x Flammable with a Howling Dawn near the magwell fits the wolf artwork well.

Why was M4A4 Howl removed?

The M4A4 Howl was removed from normal case supply after Valve determined the original artwork used on the skin involved stolen art. Valve replaced the artwork, changed its rarity from Covert to Contraband, and stopped new Howls from dropping. Since then, it has only remained available through player-to-player trading and market listings.

Why is M4A4 Howl so expensive?

The M4A4 Howl is expensive because it is the only Contraband gun skin in CS2 and no new supply enters the market. Its backstory, permanent scarcity, and strong recognition among rifle skins all push demand higher. StatTrak versions are especially limited because they also come from the old discontinued supply.

What was the original M4A4 Howl artwork?

The original M4A4 Howl used a different wolf illustration before Valve replaced it. After the art theft issue surfaced, the skin was updated to the current snarling wolf design and reclassified as Contraband. That history is a major reason the skin is discussed separately from other discontinued rifle skins.
